Why a little thoughtful organizing in November can make the busiest season of the year feel a whole lot easier.
November has arrived, and whether you're ready or not, the holiday season is right around the corner.
Before long, the decorations will be coming out, gifts will start arriving, calendars will fill up, and our homes will somehow need to accommodate more of just about everything.
And while the holidays are supposed to be a time to slow down and enjoy the people around us, they can also bring an incredible amount of extra work.
But here's something worth thinking about before December arrives: Where is everything going to go?
We spend so much time planning what we're going to buy, decorate, cook, and give, but we don't always think about making room for it all first.
And that's where a little preparation now can make a big difference later.
Make Space Before Bringing More In
One of the easiest ways to prevent holiday clutter is to take a look at what you already have before adding anything new.
Think about the toys your children have outgrown, the clothing nobody wears, or the kitchen cupboards that are already overflowing.
The holidays naturally bring more things into our homes, and when our storage spaces are already at capacity, finding room for those new additions becomes frustrating.
You don't need to declutter your entire house in November.
Start with the areas most likely to be affected by the holidays. A quick toy rotation, a little space in the coat closet, or clearing out a few kitchen cupboards can make a surprising difference.
And if you're planning to donate items, doing it now means they can potentially find a new home before the holidays.
Take Inventory of Your Holiday Decorations
Before buying another set of ornaments or a few more decorative pillows, take a look at what you've collected over the years.
It's easy to forget what we own when everything has been packed away for eleven months.
As a professional organizer, I've seen how quickly seasonal decorations can accumulate, especially when we continue adding new items without letting anything go.
When you're unpacking your holiday décor, set aside anything that's broken, no longer your style, or hasn't been used in years.
And here's one of my favourite tips: Organize your decorations as you put them away, not when you're taking them out.
Store items by category or by the area of your home where they're displayed. Label your containers clearly, protect fragile pieces, and avoid filling bins so tightly that putting everything away becomes a struggle.
Your future self will appreciate it when next year's decorating season arrives.
Give Gifts Somewhere to Go
We often think about where to hide gifts before Christmas, but what about where everything will go afterward?
This is especially important in homes with children.
Before the holidays, spend a little time going through toys, games, books, and clothing together. Encourage children to choose items they've outgrown or no longer use.
The goal isn't to take away things they love. It's to make sure there's room for the new things they're excited to receive.
And if you're shopping for family or friends, consider gifts that don't necessarily require more storage.
Experiences, memberships, activity fees, gift cards, and practical items people genuinely need can all be wonderful alternatives.
Sometimes the best gift isn't another thing to find a place for.
Prepare the Spaces You'll Actually Use
Holiday entertaining doesn't require a perfectly organized home.
But having a few key areas functioning well can make hosting much easier.
Start with your kitchen. Check your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer before the holiday grocery shopping begins. Toss expired items, use up what you already have, and make room for the extra food you'll be bringing home.
If you're expecting guests, take a look at your entryway. Is there somewhere for additional coats, shoes, and bags?
And if you're hosting overnight visitors, make sure guest linens, towels, and other essentials are easy to access.
These small changes can save you from scrambling when guests arrive.
Don't Turn November Into Another To-Do List
Here's where I think people sometimes get overwhelmed.
They decide they're going to organize the entire house before Christmas, and suddenly what was supposed to make life easier becomes another enormous project.
It doesn't have to be that way.
Choose two or three areas that would make the biggest difference to your holiday season.
Maybe it's the pantry because you're hosting Christmas dinner. Maybe it's the playroom because you know more toys are coming. Or perhaps it's finally sorting through the storage room so you can actually find your holiday decorations.
Focus on what will make your life easier, not what will make your home look perfect.
And remember, you don't have to tackle everything yourself. Whether that means sharing responsibilities with your family or bringing in professional organizing support, there's nothing wrong with getting help.
Give Yourself the Gift of a Little Breathing Room
The holidays are busy enough without adding unnecessary frustration at home.
A little preparation in November can mean less searching, less rearranging, and fewer last-minute organizing projects in December.
It means being able to pull out your decorations without digging through a mountain of storage bins, having space to put groceries away, and enjoying the excitement of new gifts without wondering where everything will fit.
Because the goal isn't to have a picture-perfect home for the holidays.
It's to have a home that makes it easier to enjoy them.
