Cinco de Mayo marks the Mexican army’s unexpected victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Against overwhelming odds, Mexican troops defeated one of the most powerful military forces in the world. It wasn’t the end of the war, but it became a powerful symbol of resistance and unity.

In Mexico, the holiday is primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place. It’s not a national independence day. That honour belongs to September 16, but it remains a meaningful reminder of courage and national pride.
